ESG (ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL AND CORPORATE GOVERNANCE)

Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG)

The government has announced the launch of ESG standards to help companies transition to renewable energy.

On 11 April 2023, the Malaysian government announced that it will introduce a framework on environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) standards by the end of 2023. The framework will aim to assist small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in funding and capacity building and support the transition to renewable energy.

The Malaysian government recognised that a number of export markets require ESG compliance from exporters and that SMEs in particular need further assistance in this regard.

ESG is best characterized as a framework that helps stakeholders understand how an organization is managing risks and opportunities related to environmental, social, and governance criteria. Stakeholders do not just include investors but also customers, suppliers, and employees. All of them are increasingly interested in how sustainable an organization’s operations are.

The Benefits of ESG for SMEs:

Competitive advantage
Having an ESG program in place helps boost brand recognition and promotes brand loyalty. Today’s consumers and clients are increasingly aware of ethical spending and care more about what a company does to support sustainability. SMEs that have taken steps to meet sustainability concerns (having an ESG program) have been known to attract more customers and clients.

Supply Chain Prospects
Much like investors are paying more attention to ESG, many companies are looking for supply chain partners that embrace sustainability efforts. For example, many retail stores are making decisions not to stock products made by companies considered to have poor ESG performance.

Cost reduction
By implementing an ESG program, SMEs can track key metrics like energy consumption, water consumption, waste management costs, and raw material usage. This tracking ability is a prerequisite for companies to plan programs to improve efficiency, which leads to reduced costs associated with energy and water usage or waste management. In addition to improving cost management, ESG programs also allow for operational efficiency, less exposure to fines/penalties, better risk management, and improved innovations.

Attraction and Retention of Talent
Today, many job seekers are looking for more than just a paycheck. They want to enjoy their jobs, feel appreciated, and make a positive impact. Working for a company with strong ESG goals appears to be the top factor for employees’ job satisfaction.

More attractive to banks and investors
Attracting the attention of investors or banks is one of the biggest advantages of having an ESG program. The growing public concern connected to climate change and sustainability is causing investors and banks to look more closely at sustainable companies to encourage this movement.

GRS (GLOBAL RECYCLE STANDARD)

Global Recycle Standard (GRS)
The Global Recycle Standard (GRS) is an international, voluntary, full-product standard that sets requirements for third-party certification of Recycled Content, the chain of custody, social and environmental practices, and chemical restrictions. The goal of the GRS is to increase the use of Recycled materials in products and reduce/eliminate the harm caused by its production.

Objectives of the GRS are:

• Alignment of definitions across multiple applications.
• Track and trace Recycled input materials.
• Provide customers (both brands and consumers) with a tool to make informed decisions.
• Reduce the harmful impact of production on people and the environment.
• Provide assurance that materials in the final product are Recycled and processed more sustainably.
• Drive innovation in addressing quality issues in the use of Recycled materials.

The Global Recycled Standard is intended for use with any product that contains at least 20% Recycled Material. Each stage of production is required to be certified, beginning at the recycling stage and ending at the last seller in the final business-to-business transaction. Material Collection and Material Concentration sites are subject to self-declaration, document collection, and on-site visits. The GRS does not address quality or legal compliance.

This is a voluntary standard that is not intended to meet the legal or regulatory requirements of any country. It is the responsibility of each operation to demonstrate compliance with all applicable laws and regulations related to marketing, labour, and business practices. Sellers of GRS products are advised to reference the allowed Recycled Content claims in the countries of sale, to ensure that they are meeting all legal product claim requirements.

FSC (FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL)

Forest Stewardship Council
The FSC chain of custody (CoC) is the path taken by products from the forest, or in the case of recycled materials from the moment when the material is reclaimed, to the point where the product is sold with an FSC claim and/or it is finished and FSC labelled. The CoC includes each stage of sourcing, processing, trading, and distribution where progress to the next stage of the supply chain involves a change of product ownership.
Any change of ownership in the supply chain of FSC-certified products requires the establishment of effective CoC management systems at the level of the respective organization and their verification by an independent FSC-accredited certification body, if the organization wants to make an FSC claim about their products.
FSC certification of such management systems is designed to provide a credible assurance that products which are sold with an FSC claim originate from well-managed forests, controlled sources, reclaimed materials, or a mixture of these. FSC CoC certification thereby facilitates the transparent flow of goods made from such materials through the supply chain.

Requirements of FSC CoC

Part I: Universal Requirements
Part II: Control of FSC Claims
Part III: Supplementary Requirements
Part IV: Eligibility Criteria for Single, Multi-Site and Group CoC Certification

Benefits of FSC CoC

Only FSC CoC certified operations are allowed to label products with the FSC Trademarks. The FSC label provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value.

Other benefits for a company with FSC CoC certified products include:
  • Improved market access in an increasingly environmentally aware sector.
  • Demonstrate that you take the environmental concerns of your customers seriously.
  • Compliance with public or private procurement policies and specifications such as the EU Ecolabel scheme for furniture, or the U.S. Green Building Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.
